After the death of the legendary Kentaro Miura, everyone was certain that Berserk would never reach its conclusion, so when it was announced that Koji Mori would take over and oversee the remaining chapters of the manga, everyone was surprised. Since then, Koji Mori has released multiple chapters.
The initial response was lukewarm, but since then, fans have really opened up to Mori and the work of Miura's assistants. This story has significantly progressed forward, and now it has reached the point where Guts is finally receiving a much-needed power-up that would put him in the same league as some of the biggest heavy hitters in the Berserk manga.
In the recent chapters, fans saw that Guts had been imprisoned by the Kushan, and he seemed to have lost all the will to fight back. The hero has been through a lot in his life. Previously, he had managed to collect himself and walk towards the next obstacle unfazed. But this time, it felt that Guts had given up completely, and he was ready to accept whatever cards fate had dealt him. After being branded as a threat to the peace of the Kushans, Guts was taken to a stupa at Daiba's behest. The Kushan leaders trusted Daiba, so they did not question his judgment. Ultimately, Guts was escorted to the stupa, and the doors were locked once he was inside. Guts was left alone with his darkest thoughts, and even Daiba was certain that the legendary Black Swordsman wouldn't make it out alive. Inside the stupa, Guts was surrounded by darkness. He couldn't see a thing, and as time passed, he began to slowly sink deep into his thoughts. After being left alone for such a long time, Guts began to remember his turbulent past. He remembered his failures, the people who mattered to him, and how he lost each one of them.

After a while, Guts was approached by an entity. It began to tell him that he was not an ordinary man. Guts was born among the dead, making him part of the astral plane. He was never supposed to exist in the living world, but since he managed to survive, he defied the laws of nature. After finally realizing that he was part of the astral realm, Guts could finally accept the truth and set out as a new man.

In the panels that followed, it became even more apparent that Guts had successfully attained peace of mind, and now he could go and challenge his enemies. He looked way stronger than his previous version, and this was further proven when he casually threw away one of the doors blocking his way out. Guts' transformation shocked Daiba and every other person who was in the vicinity. They couldn't believe that it was the same person who they had seen entering the stupa some time ago. They became certain that Guts was once again ready to fight the demons. This was reaffirmed when Guts himself said that it was time to press onwards. With his newfound motivation and strength, Guts is a bigger threat to the God Hand and their apostles. While he has taken down many notable enemies in the past, he needed a major power-up to even the odds.
Following this reveal, some fans were upset that Guts' power-up was not deserved and that it should have been handled differently, but the truth is he has been lagging behind his opponents for quite some time now. All the enemies he fought were physically superior to him. The only way Guts was able to close down the distance between himself and the others was by putting his life on the line with Berserker Armor, and that had its downsides. As fans may recall, the Berserker Armor is a double-edged sword. If used for extended periods of time, the user loses themselves to the Beast of Darkness completely, thus destroying any chance of returning to normalcy. Clearly, Guts could not depend on the Berserker Armor forever, as it would have ultimately led to his ruin.
