The Witcher franchise is on a bit of a hot streak after a quiet few years, with The Witcher 4 on pace to release in 2028 as confirmed by CDPR, and The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past launching as a major expansion in 2027, over a decade after the game's initial launch. Despite the original Witcher 3 still holding up in 2026, the surprise announcement of The Witcher 3 Remastered came at the perfect time for fans picking up the game again to play the upcoming expansion. However, those planning to try this remastered update on the Steam Deck may find mixed results.
Footage from Steam Deck HQ shared on Twitter by Pirat_Nation showcases the new Witcher 3 Remastered running on Valve's handheld device. The gameplay shown pits the original version of The Witcher 3 against the remastered version in a side-by-side comparison. Immediately, fans will notice a more vibrant world and greater detail in The Witcher 3 Remastered compared to the original. However, Steam Deck HQ notes that there are some performance hiccups with this new version.
As Steam Deck HQ shares their experience, they note that areas where the original game was achieving 50-60 FPS were now hitting around 42-44 FPS, and even occasionally dipping below 40 FPS. However, the new lighting system and shading model make the game look much cleaner than the 2015 version. Even with slightly impacted performance, Steam Deck HQ still recommends playing The Witcher 3 Remastered on the Steam Deck, saying that the touch-ups in other areas make a huge difference to the overall experience compared to the small frame drops from the more resource-intensive remaster.
