While Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin's acclaimed book series, has since become a household name thanks to the subsequent HBO TV series (along with the more recent House of the Dragon spin-off), it's not necessarily been known for diving too deep into the videogame pool. Up to now, it's primarily been a sprinkle of forgettable mobile games along with a more honest attempt in the free-to-play Game of Thrones: Kingsroad.
However, PlaySide Studios, whom you might recognize from recent hits like MOUSE: P.I. For Hire (albeit as a publisher), is taking the helm this time in what could be the most ambitious and on-point Game of Thrones videogame yet. Game of Thrones: War For Westeros is set as a top-down, real-time strategy game that puts you in the armored boots of the GoT universe's most renowned and powerful houses. Not only that, per its debut cinematic trailer from last year, some very familiar faces, such as Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Jaime Lannister, are set to make their grand re-appearance on the front lines.
While the full game remains deep in development until its release sometime in 2027 and what's shown in the demo could very well change in some form or another, after getting a small but poignant glimpse into what we can potentially expect, I can wholeheartedly say that fans of both this tactical genre and Game of Thrones can look forward to something that could very well give GoT the true-to-heart video game homage it deserves.
While the trailer that first introduced audiences to a taste of what this game would entail was far more on the cinematic front, it undeniably tantalized fans with some very polarizing alternate scenarios. While GRRM's Winds of Winter book solemnly remains ever out of reach, what we see in this trailer is, thus far, a fascinating deviation from the canon we know, albeit for a particular reason. The Night King slays Jon Snow during the Long Night and raises him from the dead, turning the Prince That Was Promised into another of the countless undead footsoldiers. Meanwhile, a two-handed Jaime Lannister slays foes with ease, and Daenerys' Unsullied army faces off against Stark infantrymen.
These scenes (eloquently narrated by Charles Dance himself, I might add) may initially come across as pure shock value, but they're all intended for a reason. Game of Thrones: War For Westeros is an RTS game that puts the fate of the country entirely in your hands, with its Great Houses and their respective military figureheads at your fingertips. It's entirely up to you who is ally or foe, and the blood-soaked path you take to the Iron Throne.
Essentially, this is a game that allows you to rewrite the canon, to a degree, albeit through an RTS scope. Unlike the intention of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, this is not an RPG, and focuses primarily on the heat of battle as its narrative. Your victories and defeats influence the outcome of the war for the Iron Throne, and any ripple effects that may further result from that. The true impact of narrative consequences in the game remains to be seen, as the demo does only give a limited scope of what to expect.
