Nintendo Switch 2 owners discovered their consoles had been permanently banned from online services this weekend despite never touching pirated software.
It started as a trickle of confused Reddit posts and spiraled into a global headache. Players from Tokyo to Texas found themselves locked out of the eShop after error code 2124-4508 flashed across their screens, and the timing stung with a packed fall lineup waiting in the wings, but something clearly did not add up.
The ban wave kicked off on September 5 and swallowed up legitimate owners across Asia, the US, and Europe.
One Japanese player had bought their system fresh from Yodobashi Camera alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing, only to get slapped with the restriction after two hours of play. Nintendo support initially told them illegal software was to blame, but they claim they had no pre-owned cartridges, and no shady credit cards.
Elsewhere, a parent claimed their daughter’s console was accused of copying cartridges even though the family had never touched duplication hardware, and their three other Switch 2 units sailed through untouched.
In China, at least 150 users on RedNote reported similar lockouts, while Indonesian buyers who had redeemed third-party Switch Online codes wondered if a fraudulent seller had poisoned the well.
By September 7, the tide turned, as affected users reported their consoles had been mysteriously unbanned, with some simply restarting their systems to find full access restored. Others who phoned Nintendo support were told an internal server issue had triggered the false flags, though the company has yet to issue a public statement on what exactly went wrong.
