Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave players will only have access to a single save file throughout their entire playthrough, marking a departure from previous entries in Nintendo's hit strategy JRPG series. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is now available worldwide exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, starting at $69.99 for the digital edition.
As the latest game in the Fire Emblem series, the story of Fortune's Weave is told through the perspective of a mysterious character named Eshmel. With the demon god Balor and his forces laying waste to the land, the new Fire Emblem protagonist must travel five years back in time and guide up to four heroes and their allies through the Heroic Games tournament. These heroes include the youthful Cai, the swordsman Dietrich, the queen Theodora, and the musician Leda. Each hero's tale differs from one another, adding layers of complexity to the plot of Fortune's Weave.
Given that completing each hero's campaign in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave will take several hours, the game has one limitation for players to bear in mind. Fortune's Weave players will have access to only one save file throughout the entire journey, marking a departure from entries such as Three Houses, which had up to 25 save file slots. In Nintendo's latest Ask The Developer blog, game director Toshiyuki Kusakihara stated that the move to only allow one save file to be accessible was the "best approach" for the game. Kusakihara said that, by consolidating a player's progress into one file, it would not waste any experience that players may gain. Associate producer Kenta Nakanishi added on by stating that the choice was also made on technical grounds. Nakanishi said that having access to multiple save file slots in the latest Fire Emblem title could create some complications at a system level.

However, to get around this, Nakanishi said that Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave players can replay chapters and jump to other characters' stories without disrupting an ongoing tale. Nakanishi said that data is preserved for each protagonist at the start of each chapter, meaning that players can go back to replay a chapter as they wish. This allows players to look at the maps for each chapter, replay a battle, or rewatch cutscenes.
