Back in August, CD Projekt Red properly revealed new Witcher 3 expansion Songs of the Past during Gamescom's Opening Night Live show. Whilst I got to experience a hands-off demo of the new content (which I loved), no one in the public has yet had chance to get their hands on the title. So, it seems like CD Projekt Red is doing the next best thing and get our, erm, ears on it instead.
Milan records has today releaseed what it is calling The witcher 3: Wild hunt – Songs of the Past (OST Gamescom 2026 EP). The release is a five-track EP featuring music by Magda Urbańska, Marcin Przybyłowicz and Daniel Elms. Available everywhere now, the EP includes music featured in the upcoming third expansion from the role-playing game that we got a small taste of last month. I think the music sets the tone nicely for the decepticly bucolic environment of Letten; treating us to folksy light-heartedness with an underbelly of malice and mystery.
"Creating music for Songs of the Past was incredibly exciting for me, but I also felt a huge sense of responsibility," notes Magda Urbańska in a press release. "I vividly remember the first time I heard the music from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — it shook me to the core. That music was extraordinary then, and it remains extraordinary to this day.
"I've worked with classical music for most of my life, but folk requires a completely different sensibility — it has its own tone and form, while also offering enormous creative freedom. But our roots, our Slavic heritage, are something more than that — something that runs deep within us, something that grows out of who we are. I hope we've managed to preserve The Witcher DNA in these pieces."
Elsewhere in the press release, the upcoming tracks from the game are described as "blending evocative orchestral writing with traditional folk influences, powerful vocal performances, and regional instrumentation inspired by the world's diverse cultures" - and you can certainly hear that in the five tracks released today.
Songs of the Past's Gamescom reveal told us quite a few things about this massive expansion - dropping over a decade after the original game came out - confirming the new playable location as Letten, confirming a new romance, noting the story has been in the works for years, and telling us that the whole project came together after a series of happy accidents.
