We’re closing in on three months since PlayStation made the bombshell announcement that, starting in January 2028, it will no longer release new games on discs. The backlash refuses to die down, and even though PlayStation has barely acknowledged it publicly, it might be rethinking its approach behind closed doors.
That suggestion comes from Moore’s Law Is Dead. In the channel’s latest episode of the Broken Silicon Podcast, it claims Sony has asked studios for feedback on the future of physical PlayStation games. Sony surveys the developers it works with regularly, but the leaker claims this latest edition is significantly beefier than usual.
Apparently, the survey asks studios for their opinions on the decision to kill discs, and whether they believe there’s an issue with cutting the legs off physical PlayStation games in a little over a year.
It’s the first suggestion that there may be a way back for PlayStation. While the stance internally when it comes to consumers is likely to ignore them and push forward, if the studios are upset with what it has planned for discs, there’s a chance that, at the very least, PlayStation pushes its plans to make all physical games codes in boxes until it launches the PS6.
If the survey is indeed real, whether it can sway PlayStation and convince it to change course depends on how the studios respond. Bigger studios are likely on board with plans to move closer to an all-digital future. Rockstar, in particular, which will embrace a disc-less future long before PlayStation does, since GTA 6’s physical edition will simply be a code in a box.
Smaller studios are the ones that are more likely to kick up a fuss. Particularly those that tend to release games digitally and then follow up with physical releases months later. In a lot of cases, those are beloved games with dedicated fans that buy digital versions of games to play them right away, and then a second physical copy later to support their favorite studios and because they want something tangible connected to their favorite games.
Aside from relying on studios to say the right thing to Sony to make the company second-guess its disc-less decision, we also need to bank on this survey being real. Moore’s Law Is Dead has a somewhat patchy record when it comes to leaks, so take this information with a grain of salt for now. However, the channel does seem to have legitimate inside sources when it comes to PlayStation. They’ve been right before, and have even been issued DMCA takedowns by Sony, suggesting they really do have inside sources relaying reliable information.
