Say what you want about Hideo Kojima's latest games, but there's truly nothing like them. Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2: On The Beach may not have lit the world on fire commercially, but they're incredibly unique, one-of-a-kind experiences that transcend the medium. On The Beach also does an excellent job of addressing the original's shortcomings, as it makes a strong argument for being one of 2025's best games.

All that being said, if there's one thing that's vitally important in modern video games in the eyes of publishers, it's profitability. Look at XBOX, which just underwent a massive reset that saw them cutting studios loose that focused on original, artistic games in favor of pushing their best-selling IPs.

This line of thinking may have resulted in the surprise announcement that Sony is no longer working with Kojima on his upcoming project, Physint. On the surface, it came as a shock: Hideo Kojima and PlayStation Studios seemed like a match made in heaven that's only rivaled by the friendship between Kojima and Geoff Keighley. They were there, after all, after Konami let the legendary developer go. However, times have changed, and we're in a whole new world of video game development.

A new report by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier dives deeper into the business decisions behind not only Sony's decision to cancel their partnership with Kojima and Physnit, but also XBOX's decision to pick him up.

Schreier explains that there were several factors behind Sony's decision, the most notable of them being concerns over the game's budget, exclusivity, and profitability. Additionally, several people familiar with Physnit told Schreier that the game has also missed deadlines, leading to it being projected over budget despite being several years away from release. Personally, I wouldn't expect this game until 2030 at the earliest, and that's even before you factor in the fact that Kojima is also working on OD. Add in the fact that Death Stranding didn't meet PlayStation's internal revenue targets, and it makes sense.
