Having a cozy farm sim game to retreat to at the end of a long day has become one of the most popular pastimes in videogames. Your character breaking free of the corporate hamster wheel and tending to a whimsical farmscape at your own pace in the countryside is all too familiar, and yet remains a formula that's tried and true.
Even as the genre grows, few of these games have sought to change that formula (though Neverway is definitely showing promise in that regard). However, one debut IP has surprisingly flipped the core foundation on its head, with a not-quite-too-distant future cityscape as your abode instead of a farm. From the team at Bajka Games comes Tiny Eden, a cozy sim that puts you in the shoes of a scientist who seeks to bring bees back from extinction through their skills in botany.
On the surface, Tiny Eden is a wonderfully cute game that gets brownie points just for giving you a pet cat to keep and customize. However, under that surface is a slew of systemic problems that keeps this game from a truly promising future as one of the more unconventional titles in the genre.
Other notable titles in the cozy farm sim genre often share a common element in that you need to explore beyond the fences of your abode to truly progress and ultimately prosper as a farmer or whatever your wholesome endeavor may be. Building connections with locals, purchasing resources from various shops, discovering mysterious ruins in the wilds outside of town, the usual formula.
However, Tiny Eden evidently prefers to consolidate pretty much all of that into an experience that's about as cozy as it gets, literally, while also being almost unsettlingly poignant about the future of convenience and human innovation. The game immediately starts you inside the high-rise skyscraper that you call home after being displaced from your previous job. You reside in the center of a metropolis that seemingly never sleeps, lights always on and drones zipping through the skies to their programmed destinations. While it would seem like you'd end up going out to explore this new city, that's surprisingly not the case.
Instead, your new city life (which is a comically ironic switch from the usual countryside getaway in these games) is completely contained inside the high-rise building itself. Your errands from home to local shops and their vendors are all under the same big roof, with just an elevator ride to get from Point A to Point B. If you're someone who likes the idea of a self-contained lifestyle without wandering into the unknown, then Tiny Eden hits the nail on the head conceptually. It's quite literally an introvert's dream, with human interaction kept to a minimum, but there's still a caveat to that.
