One of gaming's best and long-running sagas is about to meet its end. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is set to launch on April 8, 2027. If you're here reading this, you've probably been on this journey with Cloud and friends for at least as long as I have. Maybe longer. I didn't have the chance to play Final Fantasy VII and grow up with it as other people did, but Cloud being added to Super Smash Bros. finally pushed me to check the series out with a friend urging that I play the original before Final Fantasy VII Remake.
There's probably also a small fraction of you that are only just joining us, wanting to see what everything's about before it all ends. Forever. I don't blame you if you want to hop in before Final Fantasy VII Revelation, because it'll be a special time in gaming history that likely won't come around ever again. Certainly not in the same exact form. Whether you're like me, and have played these games and want to experience them again before the end, or brand-new, I not only know how to get you caught up, but I know exactly how long it takes.
Ironically enough, there are more ways to get into Final Fantasy VII than there are if you're starting Kingdom Hearts. There's, of course, the easy way out of playing all the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. Yeah, I said it. And I don't regret it. Just playing the Final Fantasy VII Remake games is good enough, but you'll never experience it the same as those who played the original first. Though, I'm hypocritical. I properly got into Final Fantasy VII by experiencing Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII with the friend I mentioned earlier. Horrible, I know.
How I got here aside, the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is set to go out with a big bang you don't want to miss. Do you want to go out with half of the attachment the game expects you to have? Or do you want to immerse yourself in everything FFVII one last time to say goodbye to it all as heightened as you can? For me, personally, I feel like I have an obligation to see this through to the end fully. And if you want to join me on this multiple game, easily hundreds-of-hours-long journey, you better pack up and get ready, because the clock is ticking.
So. There's a lot of debate on where to properly start with the older Final Fantasy VII games. As you can probably tell from what I wrote above, I'm also one to disagree with the popular idea of where to start first. There's plot twists most older fans want to protect newer fans from, but I feel like the marketing of the Final Fantasy VII Remake games has already shot this potential in the foot. Either you've been living under a rock, or you already know that Aerith dies and have some idea about how important Zack Fair is. Because of this, I personally believe starting chronologically might be a good alternative option in terms of emotional impact.
Luckily for you, the only difference this makes is that you start with Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Reunion (just because it's the same game more or less, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg) before jumping into the original Final Fantasy VII. These games can be interchanged depending on what you want to tackle. If you're someone who looks at the graphics of the original Final Fantasy VII and goes, "ew, I don't want to play that," I'm going to channel Cloud for a second and tell you to get over it. The charm of it all will grow on you. I know from personal experience.
