Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Reveals Massive File Size Requirement

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Reveals Massive File Size Requirement

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will require more storage space than its predecessors, according to game director Naoki Hamaguchi. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is an open-world JRPG that will serve as the climactic finale of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.

It's no secret that the world of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will have a variety of memorable locations for Cloud and the main cast to comb through in their battle to save the planet. With towns such as Mideel and Wutai finally becoming explorable in the FF7 Remake saga, the upcoming title from Square Enix will have plenty of content for players to peruse. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches worldwide on April 8, with pre-orders now available on the Square Enix Store and other retailers.

Knowing that Square Enix's upcoming title is a massive, open-world adventure, the game's director said that players should prepare for an equally-impressive file size to match. In a VGC interview from Tokyo Game Show 2026, Hamaguchi said that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's install size could be approximately 200GB by the time the game ships in April. This would make Revelation the largest game in the FF7 Remake trilogy by file size alone. By comparison, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade requires 94GB on Steam, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth clocking in at 159GB. Given that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will ship on a single game disc on PS5 and Xbox Series X, downloading additional data will be required to play the game on any console. Hamaguchi said, "I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent."

Following the September 3 State of Play broadcast, Hamaguchi defended Square Enix's decision to ship Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on a single download disc. Square Enix decided that the move was necessary to avoid compromising the game's quality, as shipping the upcoming title on multiple Blu-ray Discs would not only set limits on its file size but also increase the game's manufacturing costs. Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth shipped on two discs on PS5, its aforementioned installation size allowed Square Enix to do so. While a PS5 game disc can hold up to 100GB of data, an Xbox Series X disc caps out at 50GB. Ergo, physical copies of FF7 Revelation would require at least four discs on Xbox Series X and two discs on PS5 if the game were to ship fully on-disc.

Hamaguchi also discussed Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's planned DLC content, which will expand upon the stories of Sephiroth and Vincent across two separate expansions. Hamaguchi did not state when in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake timeline each expansion will be set in, but told players that Revelation's DLC packs can be imagined as similar experiences to Yuffie's story in FF7 Remake's Intermission expansion.
