This past year, I was fortunate enough to attend a preview event hosted by Dotemu. There were quite a few cool games on display, including looks at a new Warhammer game, but a few did manage to stand out among the crowd.
One of the games during that event seemed like it was going to be a cute little cozy game, but after spending quite a bit of time playing it, I came away convinced that it was going to be one to watch.
Acornia: Mirror Worlds is one part cozy game, one part crafting game and a dash of very light, but unexpectedly enjoyable combat. As far as upcoming cozy games go, Acornia is one that I've become very interested in after my time with the preview build.
The core game loop of Acornia: Mirror Worlds is a fairly simple one to grasp, and it's one that the game does a wonderful job of explaining to you. Once you gain control of Alva, a cute little squirrel with a big personality, your goals start to really come into focus rather sharply. You need to get your shop up and running, and to do that, you'll need customers to spend money so that you can build better equipment.
This is done through the game's crafting system, where you can gather materials by using Alva's ability to eat and consume both enemies and objects in the world. The more materials you gather, the more new pieces of equipment you can build for your shop, and the better it is for your customers.
The core game loop of Acornia: Mirror Worlds is a fairly simple one to grasp, and it's one that the game does a wonderful job of explaining to you.
A key part of getting that material involves the eponymous mirror world, which I gained access to almost immediately in my time with Acornia. By traveling into the mirror world, you can find enemies and dangerous obstacles that can allow you to get even more materials. The escalation of events happens quickly in Acornia, but it all feels incredibly natural, with a cast of charming, enjoyable NPCs to get along with.
