Now that Nintendo has finally done a Direct for Zelda’s 40th Anniversary, the time has come to start actually celebrating it in earnest. There are plenty of ways to do so too. One could go get themselves a cool piece of Zelda gear, or maybe they could take in some of the excellent Zelda-inspired content found all over the internet. One could even make something themselves.
There is, however, no substitute for just going back and enjoying all the fun and unique experiences that have made The Legend of Zelda so special to so many for so long. Every game in the series is a classic in its own way, but there are some that offer something just a little bit different, something that breathes new life into an old formula and reminds us why we loved it in the first place. The following are not necessarily the best in the series, but they are all of them worthy of remembrance.
The one that started it all and the one that would come to define the series’ structure for its first thirty years, The Legend of Zelda is one of the best games for any Zelda celebration to start with. The Legend of Zelda was one of the hallmark games of the NES and one of the pillars upon which Nintendo would build its future success. Not to mention that it’s also pretty much the template for the adventure genre as we know it.
The Legend of Zelda is not nearly as intuitive as most of its modern successors, but it’s still something every fan should revisit now and then because you can really see the foundations upon which almost all the following games were built.
It can be frustrating to play now, but that’s kind of the point. It really helps you to appreciate just how far the Zelda series has come.
The original Link’s Awakening felt like something of a minor gaming miracle back when it released in 1993. It was a full-scale Zelda adventure somehow crammed onto a tiny Game Boy cartridge, and it even looked better than the NES original in many ways! It also built upon the side quests introduced in A Link to the Past and gave the series its first trading sequence.
Link also got a rare bit of character thanks to his reactions to the photography opportunities scattered about Koholint Island. Its smart dungeon design (particularly Eagle’s Tower) also demonstrated that Nintendo was only just getting started with its gameplay innovations.
