For a long time, Middle-earth: Shadow of War was a game I really struggled to get into for some reason, despite being amazed by the Nemesis system as a concept and already loving J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Still, it took me several tries to appreciate Monolith’s unique take on the open-world formula, largely inspired by Assassin’s Creed. Once I reached the real meat of the experience, watching all those personal rivalries unfold as my list of objectives kept growing, I completely surrendered to its immense fun.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War is much less about exploration and more about territorial control, fortress sieges, army-building, and everything in between. The same goes for combat: pretty quickly, Talion becomes so OP with his moves, including traversal abilities, that the game challenges your entire understanding of how large-scale battles can be controlled. Shadow of War’s unparalleled combination of a deeply strategic layer with grand stakes, hunting orc captains through Nemesis-generated rivalries, and endless loot processing creates an alluring loop that’s just so hard to pause.
Any Yakuza game could work here, but Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth cranks the series’ irresistible charm to eleven, leveraging years of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio experience in its own RPG subgenre. A perfect alternative to the usual fantasy worlds, Infinite Wealth is a sprawling mix of jobs, substories, arcade games, collectibles, battles, and relationships. Dozens of smaller activities constantly interrupt one another: one minute you’re racing the clock in Crazy Delivery, and soon after, you’re photographing masked weirdos from a speeding trolley in Sicko Snap.
Better yet, the enormous Dondoko Island mode, mixing resource management with a tycoon layer, continually pulls you away from the campaign. At times, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth almost feels like several absorbing RPGs bundled together, with such wild swings in tone, mood, and gameplay mechanics that it’s hard to grow tired of. Not to mention its unique take on a class system, directly building on jobs and modern occupations. Even simply experimenting with how differently you can fight and look in Infinite Wealth is never-ending fun.
Given how thin the lines between some RPG subgenres have become, we can’t leave the massive segment of survival- and management-focused titles completely behind. Medieval Dynasty is a perfect fit for an RPG-sandbox hybrid that keeps you going with its self-perpetuating village and community management loop. One of the most historically authentic open-world titles around, taking few liberties with everyday life, jobs, and activities in the Middle Ages, Medieval Dynasty can become a real time-sink you’ll wish you hadn’t launched so late in the evening.
