Sony is reportedly asking game developers for feedback on their decision to kill physical discs for PlayStation.
Back in July, Sony confirmed that every new PlayStation game released from January 2028 onward would be digital only, a decision that caused plenty of discussion across the industry and sent collectors scrambling.
Petitions piled up, and although many grumbled, Sony held the line. The company argued in an August lawsuit that players don’t actually own the digital games they buy
According to Tom of Moore’s Law is Dead, speaking on the Broken Silicon Podcast, contacts told him Sony had sent developers possibly the biggest survey it has ever distributed
“There is a survey Sony sent out to developers that is, what I was told by my contacts, a bigger survey than they’ve sent almost ever before, if not ever before,” he said.
“And there was a question in it basically trying to ask in a not-direct way, ‘is there an issue with how we sell games physically,’ or something, like asking developers for feedback on killing discs.”
In the podcast, Tom also digs into how PlayStation’s exclusives split between digital and physical, drawing on revenue estimates from Alinea Analytics. Marvel’s Wolverine appears to have sold 1.9 million copies on PS5 in its first three days, and discs accounted for 22.9% of the $130 million it pulled in over that stretch.
That share looks almost modest beside Sony’s older heavy hitters, though, since physical copies brought in 35% of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s estimated $1.2 billion in gross revenue, while Ghost of Yōtei earned 37.6% of its roughly $400 million from boxed copies and Astro Bot squeezed nearly 47% of its $275 million out of retail shelves.
