Physint director Hideo Kojima has revealed in a recent interview that the game’s engine still hasn’t been decided, suggesting it’s not going to be Decima.
Back when Physint was first revealed to the world at the very start of 2024, it was immediately apparent that the ambitious game was a long way off. At the time, Kojima Productions was still deep into Death Stranding 2’s development and had only just confirmed that it was also working on the mysterious OD with Xbox.
Couple that with only concept art being shared for the project, and Physint seemed like a next-generation game at the very earliest. A lot has changed for Physint (and all rather recently to boot) in the nearly three years since it was announced, but some recent comments from Kojima have made it seem just as far away.
After all the recent drama surrounding Physint and how it was almost cancelled after being suddenly dropped by PlayStation, Hideo Kojima has shared some details about the project’s development. In an interview with IGN that went live earlier today, Kojima was asked about Physint’s engine and whether it’d use Decima like Death Stranding.
In response, Kojima confirmed that he “hadn’t really decided” on which engine his studio was going to use to make Physint, noting that he’s still “experimenting”. Kojima went on to say that Xbox has offered a “lot of technological support” for Physint’s development, and that he wants to use anything that he can to make the game.
OD is being made with Unreal Engine 5 and looks incredible, so I imagine that’s what Physint will end up using as well.
Kojima’s response notably dodges the mention of the Decima engine, which, even with his apparently still-positive relationship with PlayStation, suggests it won’t be used. This, combined with his comment about support from Xbox and Physint’s three years of development, makes me think Decima was the original plan before PlayStation dropped out.
Considering an engine is one of the most important parts of developing any game, all of this is to say that the road to Physint is going to be a very long one. Even if it always seemed like a next-generation game at the very earliest, it’s unarguably been made even worse with all the PlayStation drama.
