Star Wars and XCOM always sounded like a match made in heaven, and it looks like many of you felt the same. In less than an hour since its launch, Star Wars Zero Company has sped past Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Battlefront 2 to become one of the biggest games in the franchise on Steam.
At the time of writing, Star Wars Zero Company has 58,130 concurrent players on Steam - and it's still rising. That's enough to beat Fallen Order's all-time peak of 46,550, and Battlefront 2's 35,892. It puts Zero Company on track to become the biggest Star Wars release on Steam, as it's not too far behind the current winner, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
This huge wave of players on Steam likely means Zero Company is selling well. While we aren't privy to pre-order or sales data yet, it certainly can't be too bad if Zero Company is already holding its own against some of the franchise's biggest successes.
Admittedly, this is helped by a few factors. The biggest is that Zero Company can be played totally on Steam - you don't need to muck about with the EA App at all. Also, Zero Company is a tactics-based game, which many will feel suits playing on a PC better than it would on a console, as opposed to something like Fallen Order.
But of course, it also helps that the game is reviewing well. Reviews dropped yesterday and were very positive across the board. In our review, I gave Zero Company a 4.5/5, praising the gameplay and the writing. The only real issue I had was with the performance on PC; it's a rather demanding game for what it is.
I am hoping that those performance issues have been ironed out (there was a patch a couple of days before launch, and based on my limited time with it, the game seems more stable), otherwise, I can see some negative player reviews coming in. But for now, it looks like this is a win for developer Bit Reactor - not bad for a debut game at all.
