Living Shards are one of CONTROL Resonant‘s most valuable resources. They are “an extremely rare material used to unlock new Aberrant forms,” according to the in-game description—which means you need them to teach Dylan some even cooler combat moves.
You need up to three Living Shards to unlock new attacks for Aberrant, and getting the final upgrade in each skill tree sets you back another Living Shard or two. In practice, you have a steady stream of this resource, but you also need to spend it pretty consistently to keep Dylan’s attack power up. Here’s where you can get more.
We’ve found three main ways to reliably gain Living Shards in CONTROL Resonant:
You have a somewhat consistent stream while doing the main story, but it won’t be enough to unlock everything in a playthrough. You need a fair share of Living Shards to boost Dylan’s power, and odds are you won’t ever feel like you have enough (especially if you’re looking to use multiple abilities—variety is the spice of life, after all).
Buying them from vendors takes the least amount of work, but each one costs you 4000 Source. That’s not cheap if you need them in bulk, but you should have the funds to buy a few of them in a given run. In our experience, vendors seem to sell one Living Shard by default, plus another when you reach Zone Rank three.
You can’t farm Living Shards per se, since there seems to be a finite number in the game. That said, you can focus on specific tasks that drop them, such as faults, story missions, and overworld vendors. If you’re done with the game and want more, starting a New Game + playthrough will get you a hefty stash of them from the story missions and faults.
