Absolute Batman premiered on October 9, 2024 and took the world by storm. Batman has been rebooted countless times before, but for the first time in a long time, DC offered a genuinely new interpretation of the Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne was now a working-class man, his mother was still alive, and he was friends with his rogues' gallery (none of which were villains yet). Absolute Batman takes place in a darker, gritter, more grounded version of Gotham, but one that always remembers who the Caped Crusader is deep down: a hero.
Written by Scott Snyder with art usually by Nick Dragotta, Absolute Batman is a series any reader can pick up and enjooy today without needing to understand decades of Batman lore. This is a legitimately fresh start for the franchise that's twisting characters in new ways, pushing Bruce to the absolute limit, and redefining what it means to be a DC comic in the best way possible. Absolute Batman has been home to some of the series' best action, drama, and writing in years. Sadly, the comic is going on a sudden hiatus.
Following the scheduled release of issue 25 on October 28, 2026, Absolute Batman will officially be done for the rest of 2026, with no confirmed return in 2027 other than a TBP release collecting the most recent batch of issues. The story isn't over yet, as Beyond Ark M is still scheduled for a November 11, 2026 release and is deeply connected to Absolute Batman's mythology, but this is the first time the book is taking a major break.
Fortunately, Scott Snyder has already confirmed that Nick Dragotta will return for Absolute Batman 27, so if nothing else, there are still two more planned issues for the series. Realistically, though, the Absolute line has been a massive success for DC and there is no indication that Absolute Batman is winding down narratively. That hasn't stopped DC from killing great books with lots of potential early before, but hopefully they understand just how much good Absolute Batman has done for the comics industry.
The only truly troubling thing about Absolute Batman going on hiatus is the lack of information about its return. By all accounts, Scott Synder is hard at work on future issues, but too long a break could end up killing all the momentum built since October, 2024.
While it hopefully won't be long before Absolute Batman returns in 2027, the fact that DC's best ongoing series in a minute is silently and suddenly going on hiatus isn't a great sign – especially in a milestone issue like 25. It almost feels like DC is prepping the Absolute line for a premature end (the fact it's lasted this long is honestly a miracle from Darkseid). Fortunately, there's no indication that the likes of Absolute Superman or Absolute Wonder Woman are ending, so this could just be a way for the creative team to get a break.
With the legendary Absolute Martian Manhunter wrapping up in July of this year, Absolute Batman has been DC's best ongoing comic for a few months. Scott Snyder is delivering the greatest material of his career, radically revitalizing and transforming the Batman mythos in a way that feels fresh, subversive, exciting, and fundamentally true to the core of the character. Absolute Batman almost has a Shonen anime sensibility that really helps the book thrive.
