Full disclosure, just as with my preview: I am not a Star Wars person. I was hosted at the Galactic Racer preview event in London and was kindly given a code for this review, which I played on a gaming laptop with an RTX 5090, finishing the campaign on medium difficulty. When it comes to racing games, I dabble. I played a decent amount of Trackmania back in the day, plenty of Mario Kart, and some Burnout and Rennsport, but Roguelites are much more my home turf.
Which, really, makes it not very surprising that making qualifiers in Star Wars: Galactic Racer was one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I've had in recent memory. What was more surprising is that it was also tremendously fun, and for the first six hours, both of those two things somehow were true at the same time. That's worth keeping in mind for what comes next. After painstakingly winning my first few series of races, I was absolutely certain I had beaten the campaign. I had not. I had not beaten it whatsoever.
The structure I was so surprised by during the preview is the backbone of the full game. You enter races in Galactic Racer using League Entry Tokens, and if you lose without enough of them, it's back to the very beginning. The game gives you a slightly stronger car, and very little sympathy.
I could not get past the first "boss" for what felt like an eternity. I was too stubborn to turn the difficulty down, so the only remaining option was to actually get better, which is exactly what I did. The first of the campaign's three acts took me around six or seven hours. The other two went much quicker, mostly because I'd stopped hitting quite so many walls.
There is a catch, though. By the later stages, I was genuinely good at the game, so replaying everything only to be beaten in the very last encounter got old pretty fast. Medium is the recommended difficulty, and an even harder setting than the original three unlocks later for anyone who finds that too forgiving. The challenge-seekers that want to have a tough fight will absolutely get one.
Galactic Racer manages to be an underdog tale and a revenge arc at the same time. Main character, Shade, starts out as an unwilling participant in all of this, and over time, the game gives them a real reason to race and to win. Eventually, the reason behind the revenge arc is revealed. I won't spoil it, but it's a good one, and it got me even more fired up.
