Hideo Kojima’s next game blew its budget and missed its deadlines years before release, so PlayStation quietly walked away in June.
The news comes after Kojima confirmed the split himself, and it severed thirty years of history that started with the original Metal Gear Solid, the very game that made him a PlayStation name in the first place.
Sony never explained why in public, but Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier just did.
According to Schreier, the hotly anticipated action-espionage title had crept over budget and fallen behind schedule years before it was ever due to ship, and PlayStation lost patience footing the bill for a project that couldn’t hold its own timeline this early in development.
It’s a strange way for a thirty-year creative partnership to end. In the end, it was not over artistic differences, but over a spreadsheet.
Neither Death Stranding game hit the sales Sony wanted, and executives grew wary of bankrolling PHYSINT to the tune of hundreds of millions more when it wouldn’t even stay a PlayStation exclusive, since both earlier games eventually turned up on PC and rival consoles anyway.
Sony has had a rough year everywhere else too, between rising hardware prices, the end of physical discs, and the fallout from Concord’s collapse forcing stricter production milestones company-wide.
Xbox hasn’t had it easy either, with its own layoffs and console price hikes from that same component crunch, but PHYSINT still landed as an easy win. It releases most games on PC where Sony won’t, and the new deal folds in film and TV rights for PHYSINT and OD besides, a move that suits CEO Asha Sharma’s push to turn the studio into something bigger than games.
