Between Resident Evil Requiem and Zach Cregger's latest Resident Evil movie, 2026 has been an outstanding year for Capcom's flagship horror franchise. With more games, like the upcoming Code Veronica Remake, on the way, Resident Evil is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down – not this year, or the next. A new remake of 2023's Resident Evil: Death Island is on the way and will be out before the end of October.
Resident Evil: Death Island brings all of the series' main protagonists together for one of the franchise's largest outbreaks. While the original film wasn't great, the upcoming manga makes several small changes that help flesh out the story and give Leon, Chris, Jill, Claire, and Rebecca's team-up the weight it always deserved. All of Resident Evil's greatest heroes will finally reunite when the Resident Evil: Death Island manga officially releases on October 13, 2026. Penguin Random House's description for the manga reads,
"Experience the terrifying next chapter in the Resident Evil saga with Resident Evil: Death Island Vol. 1, a manga adaptation that plunges you into the darkest heart of the franchise. Set against the ominous prison island of Alcatraz, Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers confront a mysterious bioterror outbreak that turns the island into a battlefield of horror and survival."
While some retailers have the manga listed as Resident Evil: Death Island Volume 1, keep in mind that the full story is collected in this release. The manga adapts the entire Death Island movie, wrapping the story up with the final chapter. Don't expect a Volume 2, but depending on the success of Death Island, we'll hopefully see more Resident Evil manga adaptations down the road. The art, atmosphere, paneling are strong enough that it would be a shame not to remake the other movies, or try adapting the older games.
The animated Resident Evil movies aren't great, to say the least. Anyone wanting to check out the other films after watching the newest Resident Evil movie will be sorely disappointed. Fortunately, anyone who waits a few weeks will be able to experience a version of Death Island that actually does its premise and story justice. The plot is still fundamentally the same, but the manga gives moments more time to breathe, amps up the horror, and just makes the character dynamics feel more authentic.
The Death Island movie is only 91 minutes long, but with the manga at 240 pages, the pacing actually feels more in-line with a Resident Evil game. The manga does an especially good job at developing Jill in a post-Resident Evil 5 world. She truly feels like the main character, instead of one in a large ensemble where no one gets the attention they deserve like in the movie. The manga also pays closer attention to the series' lore and backstory, whereas the film suffers for trying to keep things accessible and standalone for casual fans.
