New Official SNES and Sega Genesis Release Confirmed for 2027

New Official SNES and Sega Genesis Release Confirmed for 2027

More than 30 years after its initial release, the classic 3D platformer Mr. Nutz is getting a brand-new physical release on the SNES and Sega Genesis. Mr. Nutz may not be the most recognizable mascot platformer on the SNES and Sega Genesis, as it was developed by a fairly small team and had to compete with games like Mega Man X. Still, it's a sought-after title for many retro game collectors.

Once in a blue moon, an indie developer might port its game to a classic platform, as seen with Cuphead's spin-off getting an 8-bit Sega Master System edition. But new official releases for retro consoles remain quite scarce, making the upcoming Mr. Nutz re-release a big deal for fans of game preservation and rare collectibles.

Announced in August 2026, both installments in the Mr. Nutz franchise are planned to receive official new physical editions for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, and Mega Drive. Publisher Strictly Limited has partnered with Atari on the re-release, and pre-orders for Mr. Nutz 1 and 2 are currently open. All editions are priced at 49.99 Euros, with shipping set to start sometime in Q1 2027. Strictly Limited also offers international shipping, enabling fans of rare retro games to secure a copy of Mr. Nutz no matter where they are.

The second game, Mr. Nutz: Hoppin' Mad, will be limited to the Mega Drive/Genesis, while the first game will be available on the SNES as well as those consoles.

Mr. Nutz was released in the early '90s, during a period many would call the golden age of mascot platformer games. It features an anthropomorphic squirrel that can shoot acorns while hopping between platforms. Visually, Mr. Nutz looks a lot like the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games. However, its gameplay is clearly inspired by some other renowned titles of its time, namely the Mario series. One thing that sets Mr. Nutz apart from its peers is its many secret areas and hidden collectibles.

Another selling point of the first Mr. Nutz game is its edgy design and quirky boss fights. While most missions feature lively environments and adorable creatures, players are encouraged to basically destroy everything in their path, including both wildlife and humans. At the end of some stages, they must face off against a strange boss with equally strange gimmicks. For instance, one boss throws his regenerated eyeballs at the player, while another comes in the form of an eerie headless clown.

Interestingly, the second installment, Mr. Nutz: Hoppin' Mad, was never released on the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive back in the 90s. Publisher Ocean France only released the game on Amiga, despite the game having a playable port for Sega's consoles. The current re-release by Strictly Limited is, therefore, a rare opportunity for fans of classic 16-bit-era games to add Mr. Nutz's Sega edition to their collection. Strictly Limited says, "Both releases celebrate the creativity and charm of classic 16-bit platformers while preserving two unique chapters of retro gaming history."
