10 years ago tomorrow (technically today in Japan), on the 15th September 2016, Persona 5 was first unleashed upon the world.
At the time, I don't think anyone quite knew how big of an impact the game would have. Persona 3 and Persona 4 had propelled Atlus' series beyond its Shin Megami Tensei niche, but their successor would go on to make Persona a broadly recognised brand.
Of course, we poor fools here in the west had to wait nearly seven whole months for Persona 5's localisation on PS4. But the hype was real; the highly anticipated title was met with extremely positive reviews and player feedback. Atlus had a proper hit on its hands.
Persona 5, and its expanded re-release Persona 5 Royal, would go on to break all of the developer's sales records. It's fair to say that the advent of Joker and the gang forever changed Atlus' trajectory.
Over the years since, Persona's popularity has exploded as a property, with Atlus and parent company SEGA doing all they can to keep the momentum going. Remakes and spin-offs have been abundant, to say the least.
Persona 5's immense success has allowed the two companies to really take their time with Persona 6, which was only officially announced a few months back. For what it's worth, the sequel is heavily rumoured to release in 2027.
But many would argue that Persona 5 is more than worthy of such success. It's widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of the previous generation, and perhaps one of the best RPGs ever made.
In my opinion it remains a deeply impactful, brilliantly designed example of the genre, topped off with a stunning sense of style and an incredible soundtrack. Both the original Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal received ridiculously rare 10/10 scores here on Push Square.
