Xbox has been going through some serious growing pains and restructuring this year, and the Fallout franchise has been feeling a lot of these changes the most. The Fallout games have been stuck in limbo ever since Fallout 76 launched back in 2018, and there is currently no end in sight. As a long-time Fallout fan, the lack of new games has been brutal, especially when Bethesda hasn't offered any insight into Fallout 5's launch window. There is at least the Fallout TV show to help pass the time, but the time between seasons is also grueling. However, now that Xbox has moved Obsidian Entertainment under the Bethesda umbrella, Fallout's future is looking a bit brighter.
Xbox's recent reveal that Obsidian is joining Bethesda was one of the less shocking parts of the company-wide announcement. After all, Xbox confirmed a few months ago that an Obsidian-made Fallout game was officially in the works alongside Bethesda's mainline entry. However, it's still an intriguing move that has raised questions about how this could affect the future in-development Fallout projects. Understandably, many Fallout fans are hoping that Obsidian could be working on a Fallout: New Vegas sequel, but the franchise doesn't really need a follow-up to that particular chapter. The real intrigue is going to be in seeing what Obsidian and Bethesda learn from one another.
Sure, a Fallout: New Vegas sequel would be great, but it would also be incredibly hard to actually pull off. Obsidian knocked it out of the park with its western-drenched Fallout entry. Another New Vegas game is ultimately thinking too small, though. Now that Obsidian and Bethesda are partnered up, both developers now have a golden opportunity to benefit from each studio's strengths.

It's no secret that Bethesda has been in a serious slump in recent years. Yes, Starfield was a financial success, but the sci-fi RPG has also ignited a lot of worry regarding Bethesda's future games. Starfield had some great qualities, like base-building and grounded, believable world design, but it felt years behind what other RPGs that released in the same year brought to the table. There have been several Starfield updates and two DLCs since the game's launch, and it has continued to struggle to reach the same heights as popular Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout 4.
Even though Obsidian is now under Bethesda, Xbox reassured in the company's announcement that the studio would still be working on its current projects, like Grounded 2, which has been in early access since July 2025. Unfortunately for Avowed fans, the sequel has been shelved.
Obsidian, on the other hand, has managed to achieve a much more consistent game output compared to Bethesda. Granted, the developer's recent projects like the Outer Worlds games, Avowed, and Grounded are closer in scope to AA games than AAA blockbusters. Bethesda could still learn a lot from the studio's knack for efficiency, though. Since Fallout 76's November 2018 release, Obsidian has managed to get six games in front of players. Bethesda's slow production has seriously got to be fixed, and having Obsidian under its wing will hopefully be beneficial.
