Although beloved and celebrated, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth wound up feeling like a bit of a slog for some players due to the grind required to make it to the end of the game. That isn’t going to be an issue in Revelation, as those who want to skip its side content will have the option to do so without moving forward underpowered.
Series director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed as much in a new interview with IGN Japan, translated by Genki. Hamaguchi admits that Rebirth players reached out to him with complaints about the grind required in the remake trilogy’s middle chapter. In an attempt to address those complaints, the director has revealed Revelation will let players level up automatically.
Worth highlighting that this is an entirely optional feature, and it sounds like, if executed correctly, it will combine why people loved Remake with why others preferred Rebirth. If you want a more linear experience like Remake and you just want to play through Revelation’s story, you can do that by replying yes when asked if you’d like to be bumped to the recommended level without having to head out on a string of side quests to get you there.
If you preferred the Rebirth way of doing things, that option remains. Hamaguchi previously commented on the size of Revelation and its content, and it sounds like it’s going to be similar in scope to Rebirth, if not even bigger. If you spent 100+ hours exploring the last game, doing everything it has to offer, and grinding through levels to make sure you were prepared for whatever might lie ahead, you can do the same in Revelation.
What’s unclear is whether this automatic level-up option will be a one-time offer/toggle that you can turn on and off whenever you choose, or if it’s a prompt players will be met with throughout the game. The most logical explanation would be for the message to appear every time a player is about to head into a new area filled with things they might not be ready for, although if that’s how this is being implemented, FF7 players who live for the grind might start to get annoyed if they’re constantly asked whether they need to be automatically leveled up or not.
Although I guess if you’ve already hit the recommended level for wherever you’re headed, that message won’t appear.
Giving players the option to effectively skip large chunks of a game, areas developers will have spent years curating, is quite the gesture. Especially when, amid reports that Revelation will be close to 200GB, there’s going to be so much game to see. Hamaguchi and Square Enix are clearly confident that those who want to mainline the game are in the minority, and most preparing for the culmination of this trilogy will want to explore every last inch of it before they say goodbye.
