It's been nearly a decade since the last original game in the Ace Attorney franchise, forcing fans to rely on re-releases and remasters to tie us over until the next entry in the series. Although Capcom has at least been providing new content updates and media drops to somewhat keep the series alive, it pales in comparison to a full-blown sequel that is desperately overdue.
While it looks like we're still going to have to wait for the 11th entry in the series, a brand-new spin-off game just got a surprise announcement for 2027, albeit with a pretty disappointing drawback.
Announced with a reveal trailer on the Ace Attorney VR YouTube channel, the officially licensed Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR game is arriving sometime in 2027, letting players experience the series' iconic courtroom battles from a brand-new perspective.
Rather than an entirely original game, Dual Destinies VR is an adaptation of the similarly named 3DS and mobile exclusive, updating the visuals and gameplay mechanics with new VR functionalities. Boasting new mechanics like a voice-activated "Objection" and hand-tracked gestures letting you interact with the courtroom by calling out witnesses, it isn't as simple a port of the original game.
Although the updated mechanics are certainly a cool way to experience the franchise, the announcement has been met with more than a mixed reaction, especially considering its platform limitations.
On top of the already niche virtual reality market, Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR will be exclusively available on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets when it releases next year, leaving countless players completely out of luck for playing the new game, even if they already own a different VR headset like the newest Steam Frame.
Needless to say, fans aren't exactly happy about the somewhat disappointing news, which hopefully doesn't spark a new trend where Capcom dedicates all their Ace Attorney efforts to re-releasing each entry in the series in a form most of the community can't play even if they wanted to.
