In just a short few weeks, the Dragon Ball Super anime will finally be back after a years-long hiatus. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will be remaking the original DBS anime, serving as a lead-up to Dragon Ball Super 2's eventual premiere: Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol. Described as an enhanced remake, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is going to radically trim down the first anime while bringing the story more in-line with Toriyama's vision.
Even though the Dragon Ball Super remake is meant to stick close to Toriyama's original plans for DBS, the anime is already making some changes. Super Saiyan God is getting a redesign in Dragon Ball Super: Beerus that emphasizes Goku's divine power in favor of the subversive design from Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus' version of Super Saiyan God resembles Akira Toriyama's original design for Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, but both the promo artist and anime team have made some notable changes to Goku's God form. Notably, Goku's hair is a darker shade of red, losing some of SSG's original magenta overtones. Goku also isn't nearly as slim as he was in both Battle of Gods and early Dragon Ball Super, featuring far more muscle definition.
The promo artist also features the wrong boots for Goku, gives him much softer eyes, and generally loosens his gi (which could be the artist's way of trying to indicate that Goku has slimmed down). While the promo art doesn't look great, all the trailers for Dragon Ball Super: Beerus suggest that the anime will look downright gorgeous. Even with the tweaks, Super Saiyan God Goku looks amazing in action (and if all goes well, we'll be getting a Super Saiyan God Goku VS Frieza battle this fall).
'90s kids will remember the days of Dragon Ball Z suddenly resetting back to Raditz on Toonami in the middle of the epic final battles with Frieza, Cell, or Majin Buu (the Buu resets hurting the most). Sadly, history is repeating itself as Dragon Ball Super resets the story back to Battle of Gods. Fortunately, this won't be as bad as rewatching the same episodes of DBZ over and over again, as Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will be remaking Dragon Ball Super 1 while being more faithful to Akira Toriyama's original storyline.
Reportedly, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will only remake the first three sagas for now. Fans will watch Goku unlock Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue, and Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken with fresh animation, stronger cinematography, and tweaked plot details. It's rumored that Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol will air following the end of the Universe 6 Tournament, with remakes of the Goku Black Saga and Tournament of Power set to bridge into a Granolah the Survivor anime.
One way or another, Toei will have to remake all of Dragon Ball Super eventually. It'll be jarring for new fans to go from Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, into the original Dragon Ball Super, and then The Galactic Patrol. The Goku Black and Universe Survival Sagas are also very different in the manga compared to the anime, which would require far more work than the remastering that's being done for Dragon Ball Super: Beerus.
