Should You Choose Casual or Classic Mode in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave?

Should You Choose Casual or Classic Mode in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave?

While Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave does have social elements where the characters can get to know one another and bond off the battlefield, it's the turn-based strategy action that makes up the other main part of the gameplay. As you progress through the tutorial, you'll be asked whether you want to play on Casual or Classic mode, with the game briefly explaining what the differences are. If you're unsure whether to choose Casual or Classic in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, this guide will explain everything you need to know.

The main difference between Classic and Casual modes is that when a unit's HP reaches 0, they will die permanently in Classic, whereas they'll simply retreat from the current battle on Casual mode. After you've won the battle, a unit that hit 0 HP will be available to use again in future battles on Casual, whereas on Classic they're gone forever.

This makes playing in Classic mode significantly harder than playing on Casual. You need to be far more strategic and careful when moving units around and planning out each of your turns and how the enemy might respond. Playing on Classic ups the stakes and makes battles far more challenging and intense, but it can take away from the fun for other players who want a more forgiving experience.

The good news is that the story and dialogue is the same across both modes, so you don't need to worry about missing out on important dialogue or pivotal story points by choosing one over the other. However, if you are really bothered about the story, I'd recommend sticking with Casual mode for your first playthrough so all units are available to talk to once you're no longer in battle, even if you make a mistake that results in their HP being wiped out.

If you don't want the permadeath of Classic, but want a more challenging, strategic experience, I recommend playing on Casual mode but Normal difficulty. This makes the AI a little bit less brutal and means that making a single mistake won't spell the end of a battle for you.

For those who want a brutal experience, choosing Classic and Hard is the way to go. I'd only recommend combining this mode and difficulty level if you're a seasoned pro of the series and turn-based strategy games in general, though.
