LEGO has been on a roll lately when it comes to video game sets, dating back to the Mario collaborations from the last few years up through the new Legend of Zelda sets and now the huge partnership with Pokemon. It seems like if you’re a gamer, LEGO has at least one enticing set for you, and next month, yet another one will add itself to the list.
The LEGO PlayStation set will release on October 1st, but we got our hands on the set early, and I’m happy to report that PlayStation fans will be plenty happy with this one. At a glance, you might not think that a PlayStation 1 console would offer much in the way of build variety or even display aesthetics, but there's more to this set than meets the eye.
First and foremost, it fits the bill of delivering a PlayStation 1 console in LEGO form. Given how big game consoles have gotten these days, you might not realize it, but the LEGO PlayStation is a 1:1 scale replica of the real thing. The set also incorporates a LEGO PlayStation controller as well to ensure that, from a distance, some might be fooled and not realize it’s LEGO.
Where I think that the LEGO PlayStation set typifies what makes many LEGO sets so fantastic is in its details. The way this set incorporates parts of the PlayStation legacy in smart ways, how it introduces build variety to ensure it isn’t one big, monochrome block, and two incredibly well-thought-out, additive elements are what push this set over the edge.
Some favorite details of mine include the spots that mimic the port for the power cord, the two memory card slots, and the way the PlayStation Controller “connects” to the console. Add to that two sets of functional buttons, one for Power and one to open the disc tray, and this set has a lot more dynamism. The disc tray opening mechanism is a particularly nice touch, both in its design and what it reveals.
The LEGO PlayStation set takes on an identity of its own when you reveal what’s inside the chassis of the console. On the right and left sides of the console are two slots that hold small brick-built dioramas featuring two classic PlayStation franchises. There is a miniature race track (complete with tiny cars) for Gran Turismo. And a miniature jungle environment from Ape Escape.
These two pieces slide into the console to complete the design, allowing you to peek inside the LEGO PlayStation and see them. Or you can slide them out to make the set feel more like a history of PlayStation display rather than an unassuming console that’s hiding some surprises.
When building the LEGO PlayStation set, or really any set, I’m always struck by how much effort LEGO puts into ensuring that the process is not rote or uniform. There’s a ton of colorful elements that go into this build that you never see, but are seemingly there to ensure the builder doesn’t get bored putting everything together. It’s always a delight when a build starts taking shape, especially when those smooth cover pieces go on, but getting to that point still has to be fun and this set delivers on that front.
