Classic RPGs That Are Painful To Play Today

Classic RPGs That Are Painful To Play Today

There's nothing like going back to a classic RPG after many years and discovering that it's holding up well. For example, I've been replaying 2001's Final Fantasy 10 recently, and I'm surprised at just how well its exploration, cutscene direction, and turn-based combat work, even when compared to modern RPGs.

If only this could be the norm. While I love delving back into the games I played as a kid, I'm also no stranger to that particular, acute sense of disappointment you get when rediscovering an older title, the feeling that it's not as good as you remember. I like to take a more holistic view of these games, though: even if a title is dated in some areas, it can still have value in others. To prove that, here are some great, classic games with gameplay that just doesn't hold up to modern standards.

Dragon Age: Origins, in my mind at least, is an easy pick for the best-written Dragon Age game. BioWare's introduction to this striking, original fantasy world, characterized by its mature themes and poetic dialog, is great in so many ways, but gameplay isn't one of them.

Released before BioWare found its combat groove with games like Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins can often feel like a stripped-down rendition of World of Warcraft's idle, simplistic battle system. There are some solid team tactics to be found if you look for them, but even so, Origins' combat sandbox doesn't hold up to contemporary scrutiny.

It's incredible to think that The Witcher 3, a game often cited as the greatest Western RPG of all time, came from this bizarre and cumbersome 2007 adventure. The Witcher gets a lot right from the jump, including Geralt's characterization and the overall tone of Sapkowski's novels, but it falls short in the interactivity department.

Aside from being remarkably user-unfriendly at many points, The Witcher's combat generally boils down to mashing the left-mouse button repeatedly against damage-sponge enemies. Without the more nuanced progression, build-crafting, and movement mechanics of its successors, The Witcher winds up feeling dull and awkward in retrospect.

If the recent Gothic remake tells us anything, it's that the 2001 original still has a lot going for it. At the same time, the remake shines a spotlight on just how impenetrable and intimidating Gothic can be.
