CD Projekt Red Gives Official Update on The Witcher 4 Release Date

The Witcher 4 developer CD Projekt Red issued a new statement regarding the game's planned release window ahead of Gamescom 2026. According to the developer, The Witcher 4 is currently targeting a 2028 release window, but a specific release date has not been nailed down yet. CD Projekt Red acknowledged the long wait for this new entry in the beloved RPG franchise, but promises it will be worth it in the end.

Officially announced back at The Game Awards 2024, The Witcher 4 is set to be the next mainline installment of the popular fantasy RPG series. The major shake-up with this entry is the change from longtime protagonist Geralt of Rivia to new lead Ciri following the events of The Witcher 3. While CD Projekt Red has given fans glimpses of Ciri in action in The Witcher 4, they will have to wait a bit longer to get to experience this new chapter of the franchise for themselves.

In a new video posted to social media, CD Projekt Red Joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski gave an update on The Witcher series ahead of its Gamescom Opening Night Live presence. Nowakowski notes that the development of The Witcher 4 with new protagonist Ciri as the lead is going smoothly, and the game is planned to launch in 2028. While this might seem like a long wait, Nowakowski assures fans the game will be worth waiting for, as it's the developer's biggest, most ambitious game to date.

"I know it's a bit of a wait, and you'd love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait." - Michal Nowakowski

With The Witcher 4 still two years away from release, Nowakowski also set fan expectations for Gamescom by announcing that the game won't make an appearance there. The Witcher 4 is confirmed to be developed using Unreal Engine 5 as CD Projekt Red moves away from its proprietary REDengine, which was used to create the previous two entries in The Witcher franchise. Beyond featuring Ciri as a new protagonist, The Witcher 4 is also bringing the region of Kovir to the games for the first time, as it previously appeared only in The Witcher book series.

Even without The Witcher 4 making an appearance, Gamescom is still going to be a huge show for The Witcher fans. Already confirmed for Gamescom Opening Night Live is the official gameplay reveal for The Witcher 3's new Songs of the Past DLC, which is slated for release next year. Unfortunately, Songs of the Past is only launching on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, meaning players who own the previous-gen version of The Witcher 3 won't be able to play it.

Still, the future looks bright for The Witcher series, as a remake of the original Witcher game is still in development, having previously been announced back in 2022. While a release date for this project hasn't been shared, it at least confirms that plenty of Witcher content is on the horizon.
