Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Beta Preview: Changes, Challenges, Matchmaking

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's beta was a rollercoaster of emotions. Even before it went live, Infinity Ward kicked the hornet's nest with controversial changes to matchmaking. Then things went off the rails in Weekend One thanks to horrific spawns, time-to-kill and server desync issues, and general movement problems associated with Tac Sprinting, overly aggressive slides and insane aim assist. All hope seemed lost for Modern Warfare 4 which, while learning lessons from Modern Warfare II, repeated many issues that were fixed in Call of Dutys Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 7.

Then Weekend Two came along, and Infinity Ward changed nearly everything. The time-to-kill and movement were brought more in line with Modern Warfare III, spawns were heavily altered to be more fair, and Tac Sprint as reworked into a Perk (much like in Black Ops 7). These changes may have helped alter Modern Warfare 4's fate, shifting it away from the loathed Modern Warfare II and more towards Modern Warfare III. Overall, by the end of the beta, though work still needs to be done, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is in a much better state than when the beta started, though a massive looming cloud hangs over the whole experience.

Let's just get this out of the way: matchmaking. What Infinity Ward ultimately decides to do with matchmaking will likely make or break Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Treyarch's decision to release Open Matchmaking made Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 one of the most enjoyable experiences in years. The match variety, quality and connections were superb. It felt like classic Call of Duty, and that same feeling permeated the Modern Warfare 4 experience when in the Open Mostpit.

Throughout both weekends, however, the odds seem stacked against Open Matchmaking. Only available in one playlist, players had no control over map voting (in Weekend One) or mode selection. Infinity Ward would then pack the selection screen with other variants (ex: Transit 24/7), seemingly trying to hide Open Matchmaking and skewing results of any tests they were running. It's an absolute shame, because the best experiences from the beta were in the Open Mostpit. All matches in the extremely strict normal matchmaking were completely terrible.

We strongly implore Infinity Ward to scrap the current matchmaking and return to Open Matchmaking. Use that as a foundation and make the tweaks needed to lower quit rates or any other metric Activision isn't happy about. The current matchmaking is too strict, manipulative and hides what is otherwise becoming a solid Call of Duty title. Launch with the current matchmaking and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 might be doomed from the start.

There's no way to sugarcoat it; Beta Weekend One was a disaster. While it was clear that Infinity Ward had learned many lessons from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, it was also abundantly clear they didn't take lessons learned from Call of Dutys Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 7. Poor combat pacing, time-to-kill inconsistencies, netcode desync, movement faster than Omnimovement and laser beam aim assist all contributed to a negative experience. Thankfully, Infinity Ward listened.

By the time the beta ended, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 played more like a successor to Modern Warfare III than II. Time-to-kill was reduced, requiring an extra shot to kill versus the previous week. While it's true that this change makes this feel less like an Infinity Ward title, this was still the right move to make. Weapons can still kill plenty fast, but now there's more opportunities for interesting gun fights. Considering how positively received Modern Warfare III's multiplayer ended up being versus Modern Warfare II, this is a change that needed to happen.

There were several other positive changes. Aim assist, which was extremely high in Weekend One, was toned down heavily for the second weekend. Much like Black Ops 7, players now have to put a little more skill into aiming. More work needs to be done, however, as the aim assist for Snipers and Marksman Rifles remains ridiculously high.
