New Official Pikmin Release Confirmed for November

A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition has been announced for Pikmin 4, and it will arrive in the month of November. Pikmin 4 was released on the original Nintendo Switch in 2023, and is the latest numbered entry in the long-running series. While Pikmin has yet to reach the level of popularity of Nintendo franchises like Splatoon and Animal Crossing, it continues to see a big push from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Switch 2 has yet to receive an original Pikmin game, but Nintendo has made efforts to improve some of the existing entries in the series. Pikmin 3 recently received a free update, which improved the game’s visuals while also offering support for the Switch 2's GameShare feature. These updates are clearly meant to keep existing players interested, while also attracting those who missed the Pikmin games on previous platforms.

Set to arrive on November 12, Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy will be getting both a digital and physical release. An upgrade path will be offered for existing owners, which will cost $9.99 on the eShop. Oatchi was one of the biggest additions to Pikmin 4, and the Nintendo Switch 2 version adds new ways of interacting with the space pup. Notably, players can use the Switch 2 microphone to give Oatchi commands and even offer praise. The game also has an additional mode called Dandori Academy, which allows players to take on brand-new challenges.

In Dandori Academy, Pikmin 4 players will be able to take on timed challenges that span multiple difficulty levels. In these challenges, players are tasked with figuring out the optimum path and the necessary number of Pikmin needed to collect treasure while taking as little time as possible. Dandori Academy will also feature a weekly exam, which can be taken once on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. In total, 72 exams will be released, and there will be leader boards where players can see the results of their friends and other players.

Nintendo Switch 2 Editions have become a common sight since the system's release. Games like Xenoblade Chronicles have gotten Switch 2 Editions, with developers using the opportunity to improve graphics and performance on older Switch games, while also incorporating new content. Nintendo has not confirmed whether Pikmin 4's visuals or performance will see any improvement on Switch 2, or if the new content will be the sole focus.

Pikmin 5 seems inevitable at some point, but there's no indication when the next entry in the series will be released. A full decade passed between the releases of Pikmin 3 and 4, and fans can't be blamed for worrying that there could be a similar wait for the next game. However, there are positive signs about the future. Between Pikmin animated shorts, as well as free and paid upgrades for existing games, it seems Nintendo wants to assure fans that it remains committed to the series. That's a very good sign, and the Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition could help players pass the time while they wait.
