Two of the best video games based on The Lord of the Rings are coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 soon, with a trailer revealing that the Nemesis system is making its long-awaited return.
There have been many video games based on The Lord of the Rings released over the years, but the fact that so many are connected to the Peter Jackson trilogy means that they have to be licensed, and those expire. This means there are lots of incredible Lord of the Rings games that are locked to older systems and may never see the light of day.
Two of the best Lord of the Rings games from the PlayStation 4 era are making a surprise return on a new platform. A new trailer on the Aspyr YouTube channel has confirmed that Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War, are coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 30, 2026, with pre-orders on the eShop available now.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War follow Talion, a ranger of Gondor who is slain and revived by the spirit of an elven lord. Together, they use Talion's new necromantic abilities to bind the orcs of Mordor to their cause, and seek to destroy Sauron, long before the events of Fellowship of the Ring.
Talion has similar skills to the main characters from the Assassin's Creed series, able to sneak around enemy camps, silently backstab anyone unlucky enough to get into his range, and swiftly punish anyone who attacks with a well-timed counter. The power of the elven spirit also allows Talion to take control of his enemies, letting him guide their rise through the ranks, and obliterate Sauron's forces from within.
The Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the Middle-earth games contain all the DLC from their original releases, and can be purchased together as part of a bundle. Those who pre-order the game ahead of launch can get it for a steep discount.
The two Shadow games are known for the Nemesis system, where enemies who slay Talion, or manage to escape from battle, can return later with some new tricks, meaning he can have a rival amongst the forces of Mordor.
The Nintendo Switch 2 ports of the Middle-earth games have been done by Aspyr, the studio behind the recent remaster of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. In a press release announcing the Switch 2 ports, they confirmed that even more games are on the way, giving fans of The Third Age and the PS2 Return of the King game some much-needed hope.
