It’s that time of year again when every gamer struggles to find a free hour to squeeze yet another hot new release into their tight schedule. I know the pain, as this Fall is more stacked than ever before for one huge reason, coming this November. As such, barely a few days pass without the next big thing trending as the year’s latest highly rated must-play title. Not that anyone is complaining, but it’s really getting hard to keep up if you aim to complete most of the games you start.
Unsurprisingly, October is the pinnacle of this year’s gaming avalanche, with no sign of a slowdown after an already packed September. Regardless of your main platform, be it PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, or Xbox Series X/S consoles, there are just so, so many anticipated games gearing up for launch, and it’s almost one loud name after another. With that in mind, let’s look at the most anticipated Xbox games releasing this month, while trying to come up with some sort of plan to play most of them and still leave time for sleep.
One of the few smaller releases here, End of Abyss makes a solid impression among this year’s better Metroidvanias, especially if you’re a fan of eerie atmosphere built almost entirely on exploration and isolation. With former Little Nightmares developers behind it, it’s not surprising that the game is a pretty unique cocktail, mixing survival horror elements, grotesque visuals, demanding platforming, and challenging bosses, all set in a truly connected world with little to no guidance and lots of backtracking.
Given that End of Abyss was funded by Epic, the game won’t be coming to Steam on PC, so fans might want to check it out on consoles instead, including PS5 and Xbox. While End of Abyss probably shouldn’t be overlooked amid bigger titles this season, early reviews point to a notable lack of polish in the day-one version. If you’re particularly sensitive to bugs, it might be worth waiting for a patch or two.
After a nearly eight-year gap since the previous mainline release, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve should be as easy to recommend to newcomers as it is to veterans of this iconic, long-running aerial combat series. I mean, even having never played the series before, I was sold by just a couple of trailers and can’t wait to give it a shot. Its universal critical acclaim only adds to the appeal, making Ace Combat 8 one of the highest-rated releases of the year.
Seemingly far more than just an arcade flying sim, Wings of Theve promises an action-packed, cinematic story campaign with memorable characters, stylish cutscenes, and edge-of-your-seat twists, complete with stunning visuals and music. Based on the reviews, it would be a huge mistake to dismiss Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve as a hardcore, demanding sim offering little beyond flying and shooting things out of the sky, even though the aerial combat is definitely part of the appeal. Even if this looks like something you’d never play, sometimes the best surprises come from stepping out of your comfort zone a bit.
Seriously, it’s been way too long since the last mainline Gears of War release, so it’s about time Marcus Fenix & co. made a high-stakes return to remind us that Xbox isn’t only about Halo. Gears of War: E-Day takes players back fourteen years, before the events of the original game. There’s lots of untapped potential in witnessing Emergence Day firsthand. Despite the significant enhancements and tweaks on display, the series’ core formula seemingly remains intact: it’s the same brutal, intense cover-based shooter where your positioning is as important as weapon mastery.
Technical prowess is yet another ace up Gears of War: E-Day’s sleeve, as The Coalition has mastered Unreal Engine technology like few other studios, so it’s safe to assume that we’re about to witness one of the best examples of UE5 in action yet. Another important note: unlike most recent Xbox Game Studios titles, Gears of War: E-Day is confirmed as an Xbox console exclusive, so it won’t be following Halo to PS5 anytime soon.
