World of Warcraft: Forever players lost beta access over offensive character names, and a senior producer said he had “no sympathy.”
The crackdown comes during a messy first week for the hotly anticipated beta, which already saw players accuse Asmongold’s Olympus guilds of flooding cities with spam and slurs, and one player build a mod that hides the entire guild.
Now, Blizzard turned its attention to user names.
In a forum post on September 24, Blizzard confirmed it was “issuing forced name changes to characters found to be in violation of our character naming policies.”
It also severed beta access for “some users who created names that were far outside of our Code of Conduct.” The post did not say how many accounts were affected, but it did go on to explain the reason behind this decision.
“The World of Warcraft team takes the safety and inclusiveness of our game very seriously. These actions were performed directly by the World of Warcraft Development team and were individually reviewed. The Customer Service team cannot and will not assist with any appeals. Our system for enforcing naming standards will be coming online very shortly.”
As complaints started being slung online, senior game producer Tom Ellis addressed them directly on X.
