Ciri's up next, but there's still a lot to come.
One of the most prolific studios in the gaming industry continues to grow, it seems, as CD Projekt Red nurtures not only Cyberpunk and The Witcher, but a new project far down the road.
Today’s quarterly earnings report from the developer revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 has crossed a whopping 40 million copies sold, and its companion DLC Phantom Liberty bringing in another 15 million.
“These numbers reflect deliberate lifecycle management: platform expansion, broadening player reach, and continuous support for the game itself,” said joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski of the big numbers. “Today, Cyberpunk is an evergreen franchise and its value compounds well beyond the game itself.”
Cyberpunk has expanded well beyond the game with the Edgerunners animated series and even a new trading card game, but the sequel is also in the works with more developers working on it now than four months ago.
I love these little handy graphics that the studio puts out, detailing exactly how much of the studio is working on what. The Witcher 4 is due up next in 2028 so it’s got the biggest team, but the Cyberpunk sequel is now at 184 devs working on it. Beyond that, it’s got two more projects codenamed “Sirius” (something in The Witcher franchise) and “Hadar” (a mysterious new IP) in early development, with both teams growing as well.
The studio’s vice president of investor relations Karolina Gnaś also confirmed that it hopes “to hire more, up to 50 developers by the end of this year,” so there doesn’t seem to be any slowing down out there in Poland.
I appreciate these graphics, and CD Projekt Red puts them out consistently throughout the year for not only investors, but fans to see what’s in the pipeline for them. I hope to one day dive into my backlog and give Cyberpunk and The Witcher a chance myself (please shame me).
