Control Resonant will actually tell players off if they spend too much time on side missions instead of on the main story, despite having a world that’s begging to be explored.
In my time with Control Resonant so far, one of the standouts has to be The Board and its surprisingly varied amount of reactions to what Dylan and the player are doing in-game. If you try and skip their dialogue, they’ll complain and stop you; if you stand around in The Gap too long they’ll start to sing, and they even have comments for story moments.
It’s a nice surprise considering how important they are to the wider world of Control, especially when it comes to Dylan and Jesse. Perhaps the best example of them reacting to what the player does, though, is the comment they’ll make if you spend too much time on side missions and exploring the world instead of on the main narrative.
Ever since Control Resonant launched earlier this week, players have been sharing some of the game’s surprising inclusions, from karaoke moments to impact frames once Dyland gets powerful enough. My favourite of the bunch, though, was shared by Twitter user Pedrouiuiu, who got an “earful from The Board”.
That’s because they were playing the game “real slow” and had spent 20 hours wandering around the map and completing side missions. This caused The Board to call Dylan out when he visited The Gap, noting that “We are displeased/bored by your time management failures” and that Dylan shouldn’t be “saving people/pawns/recyclable materials”.
To be fair, I think I’d be feeling the same after 20 hours…
It’s a very cute detail that shows just how much care and attention Remedy put into Resonant. I don’t really know if it’s that much of a surprise considering how often they include fourth-wall-breaking things in their games, but it has to be one of the best moments of it in Resonant, at least.
