Occasionally, a JRPG remake comes out and blows my expectations out of the water. With the genre as widely understood as it is and often emulated, it's always a treat when a founding cult classic gets a remake and justifies its status as a fan favorite.
At this year's Tokyo Game Show, I got a chance to try out Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, Square Enix's upcoming remake of the cult classic originally released in 1995. This new version follows in the footsteps of the previous SaGa remake released back in 2024, which JRPG fans praised highly, with some going as far as to say it's the finest JRPG they've ever played.
Somehow, this series has entirely escaped me, and the first time I heard about these remakes was going into Tokyo Game Show. As I've been on a major JRPG kick lately, I was more than keen to try out the game and have that cozy and familiar gaming experience.
I can't say the game is blowing my expectations out of the water so far. In saying that, I think it's positioning itself nicely as a neat experience for JRPG fans looking for a familiar experience with enough spice to feel fresh amongst other titles.
Heading into the game, all I knew about the SaGa franchise was that JRPG fans swear by its combat. I'm far from a turn-based combat hater, so I was keen to see what the hubbub was about. While I only got to experience a small slice, I think I see the appeal, even if it isn't as revolutionary as the hype implied.
In this demo, we were given the opportunity to try out one of two sections: "Palace of the Archfiends: Rescue the missing Gon!" from an earlier section of the game. The second was "Gwayne's Den: Encounter with Gwayne" for a tougher section in the mid-game. Of course, being new to Romancing SaGa, I opted for the first section for newbies.
