The Witcher 3 Remastered has been a huge success for CDPR, bringing millions of players back to the Continent just in time for Songs of the Past, but it hasn't been completely smooth sailing. AMD users have found themselves in a drowner's nest of trouble with graphical glitches, and there have been a litany of performance and visual issues more broadly across PC, forcing players to toss a Samum bomb into their settings just to hit a stable frame rate.
CD Projekt Red deployed a hotfix today to address most of these issues, rolling back Nvidia HairWorks to smoothen out performance while making tweaks to bloom after players reported the game looking washed out with it enabled. Nonetheless, The Witcher 3 is still seeing an influx of negative reviews, with over 1,100 posted on launch day. Fans called the game "near-unplayable" and "completely broken," advising others, especially those with AMD cards, to revert to the next-gen version.
On September 30, over 700 more negative reviews were filed, with players complaining about the "unskippable launcher," "totally broken performance," and "destroyed menu navigation." Today alone, another 237 negative reviews have been posted, echoing the same complaints about a "buggy launch," "changed art style," "instability", and seemingly endless "graphical glitches."
Still, the influx of negative reviews has done little to dent The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered's momentum. While there might be a giant orange-red bar poking out from the review graph, it's still dwarfed by the sheer number of positive reviews piling on top.
Here’s what that split looks like at the time of writing:
That means roughly 32% of reviews since the remaster launched have been negative, which certainly risks dragging down the Recent Reviews score if that trend continues. However, with patches already being deployed to address the most blatant issues, and a new AMD Radeon driver available that should address the graphical glitches for AMD users, it's unlikely the same volume of negative reviews will continue to pile up.
It's also worth noting that several of the negative reviews are based on the mistaken belief that the remaster has entirely replaced the original game, with some claiming they'd rather play the next-gen or classic version. That's still entirely possible on PC by right-clicking The Witcher 3, selecting Properties, and then opening the game's Versions & Betas tab. From there, you can select either the next-gen release or the classic build.
Indeed, one of the top positive reviews spells this out. "CDPR didn't take anything away, you just need to manually pick the version you want in the Steam settings," Young wrote.
