After years in Early Access, Valheim is finally here. But for players with hundreds of hours behind them, the biggest question isn't what's new. It's whether they should throw all that progress away. Starting over after building a massive base, defeating bosses, exploring the world, and collecting gear almost sounds painful. Why return to square one when there's a perfectly good save waiting?
That's exactly what makes Valheim 1.0 so interesting. After such a long Early Access journey, Iron Gate is actually recommending that players start fresh to experience the full release. Even a PC Gamer writer with more than 400 hours in Early Access came away feeling that the progression works better from the beginning. So, is starting over really worth it? For Valheim veterans, 1.0 might make the answer surprisingly complicated.
Starting over after hundreds of hours in Valheim is a brutal proposition. Veterans may have massive bases, powerful gear, stocked chests, and entire regions of the world already mapped out. All that time was spent building something, so why would anyone willingly leave it behind?

There is also something satisfying about having a world that feels like home. That first impressive base may have taken hours to build, while every new piece of equipment represents another step forward. Even the resources sitting in a chest can remind players of how much work went into collecting them. Throwing all of that away just to start with a crude weapon and an empty inventory sounds a lot like punishment.
But Valheim is at its most satisfying when everything has to be earned. Finding better equipment matters more when there is nothing better waiting in a chest. Building a small shelter feels more meaningful when there isn't already a huge base somewhere nearby. Even familiar enemies can feel dangerous again when a player doesn't have the gear to steamroll them.
With Valheim having entered Early Access in February 2021, it may have been years since players encountered initial challenges, and after hundreds of hours, it can be easy to forget how rewarding those early milestones were. Starting from nothing brings that feeling back. Suddenly, every new resource matters, every upgrade feels useful, and every trip into the wilderness carries a little more risk.
After more than five years in Early Access, many longtime Valheim players probably know the early game almost too well. They know which resources to grab, which enemies to avoid, and roughly what they need to do to get their first decent base up and running. Starting fresh changes that routine. Instead of rushing through familiar steps to get back to the good stuff, players have a reason to actually experience them again. A basic weapon feels useful. A new piece of equipment feels like a genuine upgrade. Even setting up a temporary shelter can feel useful when there is no established home to fall back on. And for veterans, that could make the opening hours feel like part of an adventure worth appreciating all over again.
