Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the latest entry in the legendary strategy RPG series by developer Intelligent Systems and publisher Nintendo. Taking place in the same universe as Fire Emblem: Three Houses but on another continent, the game’s an expansive experience with a lot to do.
Taking place on the continent of Dagda, Fortune’s Weave is an epic that spans three different major points in time. After a prologue establishing the future conflict that players will have to come back to eventually, the game goes back in time to the point of the Heroic Games that put multiple groups to fight against each other in Dagsion’s Grand Arena.
In this first act, players can pick between four major protagonists, each with their own stories to unveil. Cai is a young man whose father has been arrested and is fighting to free him from this situation. Leda’s quest is also very personal, as she looks for vengeance against those responsible for the Cydonia Massacre. Meanwhile, Dietrich’s a quirky swordsman looking for strong opponents and Theodora is a new queen in Saramis who wants to be strong enough to protect her people.
Their participation in the Heroic Games brings big evolution to their personal circumstances as they face others and join forces with some individuals for the matches. Over time, these heroes gain renown and can convince others to join their ranks if they want. After the events of Part I, a major war takes place, forcing these individuals into a complicated conflict that destabilizes the continent before, eventually, we come back to the initial portion of the game.
Some aspects of this are optional, and in fact, the player could just ignore the past, moving with a significantly smaller group at their disposal. It will be much tougher to deal with future conflicts, like a suicide mission, with the first mission already being a tough customer right away, but it should all still be possible with good strategy.
A major part of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is managing your troops, with Acts I and III offering “Free Time” sections. In these moments, players can move around the continent, doing various side quests and getting stronger before the big challenge that ends the chapter comes. Act II works differently as the game’s war arc limits the player’s movements to be a more straightforward experience of going from a conflict to the next one with small respite moments in-between.
In any case, the schedule management aspect is significant here, letting players do many different things when Free Time is available. Every in-game day is divided into multiple turns corresponding to about 6 hours, which is about how long it takes to move up to three nodes in the world map. A curious side of this map exploration is that this overworld is initially pretty much uncharted, with new nods being discovered by the player through actually going to new places and talking to people living in different towns.
It’s not always necessary to go out and deal with quests, however, as there may be times in which the main quest may be too close or the player may want to take advantage of upcoming weekly events like discounts, for instance. In those cases, this "routine simulation" of sorts also lets players spend turns directly at an Inn to restore the team’s condition or put the units to training.
