World of Warcraft: Forever's beta was hit by a name ban controversy that led a developer to speak out, but they received threats of doxxing and violence aimed at them and their loved ones, eventually deciding to delete their account on Twitter. The World of Warcraft: Forever beta launched just over one week ago, and Blizzard had to increase the player cap more than once just to allow everyone to log in, proving the game is already a hit. With the game coming out on November 4, the beta is useful for highlighting bugs and various issues.
Despite being out for only over one week, the game has been hit by multiple controversies already. One of the biggest is the return of Asmongold, who is known for problematic statements on social media and even live on Twitch. Unhappy with the spam caused by Olympus, a fan made a World of Warcraft: Forever add-on that mutes Asmongold and his guilds, to which the streamer replied that it's "either a hate crime or racism." One of the new features in the game is that players can use two names for their characters, and some players ended up being banned for breaking the TOS.
Blizzard senior game producer Tom Ellis received threats and had players dig into their social media accounts after stating that they had "no sympathy" for some of the players who were banned in the official WoW: Forever beta over problematic names. According to reports, much less than 1% of the total accounts saw their beta access removed, and it was for severe violations of the Terms of Service for character names, whereas other players were simply forced to change their names. A player shared a screenshot as proof that their character, named "Sundayschool Predator," was given a name change, prompting other players to wonder what the other offenders did to get banned. Ellis' post stated that Blizzard could see all the names on an account, including those of unplayed characters, and asked players to be "better humans." This wasn't received well by many players, who then threatened Ellis and tried to dig up old posts of theirs to paint the senior producer in a bad light.

Not only that, but some players also got upset that there were bans in the first place in the beta, stating that this was unacceptable. Many reported names were discriminatory at best, with others being racist, homophobic, or even promoting political ideologies. Asmongold chimed in on the controversy, too. Blizzard enforcing its Terms of Service immediately became problematic, and Ellis' comments inflamed the conversation to the point that threats were made. Despite the joy the game is bringing with content like WoW: Forever's new serpent Druid form or the added weather effects, some issues with its playerbase remain.
Still, the game's beta has proven to be very successful overall, and the fact that there is official gamepad support for World of Warcraft: Forever can help deliver the game to a wider audience. Whether the incident with Ellis will impact Blizzard's communications with its fans remains to be seen, but regardless, it's unlikely to be the last name ban wave.
In addition to all this, World of Warcraft: Forever adds Undead Paladin and other interesting race/class combinations that were not available in vanilla WoW, all while also adding a new race. Blizzard confirmed that no new race is coming to retail, though, and the Skyborne elves may remain unique to Forever.
