Branching narratives are a staple of genres like RPGs and JRPGs, but most games have a linear story with the same outcomes for everyone. This is especially true for Soulslikes, where the main appeal is in the gameplay rather than choice and player agency where the story is concerned.
Choice is a powerful thing though, and some Soulslikes also benefit from branching narratives, even simple ones, as they improve the replayability of the game. Many Soulslikes are one and done, but some encourage you to play again just to see the alternative outcomes they have to offer. Here are some of them.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has four endings, including one that ends the game prematurely. Avoiding it is a simple matter of paying attention to Sekiro's dialogue, themes, and characters in the game. The other endings are better than this Shura ending, but they depend on the quests you completed.
Completing Sekiro's side quests leads you to resources you otherwise wouldn't have, giving you more options at the end of it all, and ultimately, a better outcome. None of Sekiro's endings result in a perfectly happy ending, but the best one does resolve the main problem of the world and has a more positive outcome for Wolf and Kuro.
Remnant 2 has an unusual amount of variation for a Soulslike, and its RNG system means that no playthrough will be identical to another. The World Stone teleports you to one of three worlds at the end of the prologue, and whatever world you end up in is completely random. This is split further into different story scenarios on each of the three worlds.
The different storylines and locations eventually all reunite at the same place, but your perspective of the ending will be influenced by the worlds and storylines you end up experiencing. The effectiveness of this very experimental Soulslike format was successful to varying degrees, but it undoubtedly gives Remnant 2 a branching narrative and a lot of replay value.
Lords of the Fallen offers an ending for each of its three factions, the Umbral, Infernal, and Radiant. The Radiant ending is the default and most straightforward of the endings to get as it doesn't require the busywork or finding elusive NPCs that the other endings require.
