If there’s a single, constant thread between nearly every major Marvel superhero, it’s that all of them have worn a lot of different costumes over the years. Remember, these characters have been around since the 1960s; aesthetics and trends change, every writer and artist have their own unique preferences, movie deals change standards, and so on. This is why, like so many of his contemporaries, Wolverine of the X-Men has had quite a few different fits.
In the same vein as the many different suits that were made available in the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, so too does Marvel’s Wolverine feature a spattering of different suits, outfits, and on occasion, states of being for everyone’s favorite hairy Canadian. Compared to the likes of Spider-Man, I’m not quite as well versed in the narrative weight behind all of Logan’s outfits, but I do know what I like, and I like to think I know what he looks good in. With that in mind, these are the outfits in Marvel’s Wolverine that I think best fit his many flavors of perpetually pissed-off.
Something people joke about a lot is that Wolverine’s signature yellow and blue suit is, obviously, nowhere near the coloration you’d expect to see on an actual, real-life wolverine. Obviously, nature accuracy is not the first thing people consider when coming up with names or outfits for superheroes, but I do have to admit, Logan does know how to rock those more nature-accurate colors.
The Classic Brown outfit is based on the suit Wolverine wore in the X-Men comics at the turn of the 1980s, starting with issue 139. It keeps the striking gold coloration on the head and legs, but swaps the black accents and deep blue out for an earthy brown. This change proved quite popular with the comic’s readers, so Logan kept this suit on through the entirety of the 80s and up through the early 90s, occasionally returning to it when the interest struck him with a few more modern accouterments.
In the early 2000s, the very first live-action X-Men films hit cinema screens, and they did quite well for themselves both critically and financially. For as much as people liked those movies, though, there is one bit that still gets lovingly memed on to this day: the outfits. Specifically, the fact that all of them ditched the typical hero standard prior to the 2000s in favor of copious amounts of solid black leather.
The New Leather outfit, while not quite identical to the outfit Wolverine wore in the 2000s X-Men films, is very similar to it, and very clearly reminiscent of it. It features leather pants, leather gloves, and an open leather jacket with Logan’s prominent chest hair on full display. For as much as the leather outfits get memed on, I still have a soft spot for them, even if the amount they squeaked probably wouldn’t be conducive to Logan’s hunter tactics.
