Destiny 2’s end-of-service earlier this summer soured players everywhere, but the game’s makers at Bungie have now announced that the franchise is not dead, and it begins with restoring a bunch of content that was taken out of the game over the years.
In a new blog post and video, Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids will be making their way back into the game, and they will be available for free for all players.
It appears that the massive player outcry following Destiny 2’s live-service period coming to an end was heard loud and clear, so the franchise will continue on, and it begins with adding back old content before working on new titles. But it won’t be a simple process, the studio warned.
“Bringing this content back is not as simple as restoring old files,” Bungie said. “Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems. That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today.”
This is just the start, though. New Destiny experiences are likely to come, but “this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve.”
“Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future,” the studio said. “We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe. All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny. We want to return Destiny to its original promise, to recapture the qualities that have always made it special. The awe-inspiring mystery, meaningful discovery, and a community of Guardians coming together against impossible odds.”
So while this isn’t exactly the confirmation of Destiny 3, it’s a good start in returning to the franchise someday, as the team left working on Destiny 2 will help restore a lot of memories via the content that was taken away. And that was one of the game’s biggest complaints over time, so to see it being addressed right away is a great first step.
“This is an important time for Bungie,” the studio said. “Our future depends on making clear choices about where we focus, delivering what we say we will, and being honest about our successes and failures. Stability doesn’t mean shrinking our ambition. It just means that we have to focus on the things you want to see from us, and making sure our vision matches our reality.”
