Waiting for a delayed flight out of the UK earlier this month, I heard word that Koei Tecmo had announced a game based on the light novel series The Apothecary Diaries, subtitled The False Imperial Brother.
As the rest of the Push Square team will attest, I let out a little yelp – both IRL in the busy airport and virtually in our Slack chat.
Clearly the dev heard word of my excitement, because a few days later I was offered the opportunity to chat with producer Junzo Hosoi, director Akari Takinami, and Toho’s Takayuki Onishi at the Tokyo Game Show.
For those who don’t know, The Apothecary Diaries is a long-running story set in a historical world, starring heroine Maomao – a trained apothecary who uses her knowledge of potions to solve various mysteries.
This new game, developed by Atelier maker Gust, is a full-blown big budget adventure, due out in 2027.
You’ll explore the 3D world, interrogate characters, gather materials, brew potions, present evidence, and resolve scenarios.
Below is my conversation with the team, conducted via an interpreter from Koei Tecmo. This interview has been lightly edited for readability, so please keep that in mind.
