I can't think of too many consoles that were the epitome of hope like the Nintendo Wii. That might be my nostalgia talking, but the way that it came up, invited you to play with the famous "Wii Would Like to Play" commercials, and ended up nailing motion controls is perfectly wrapped up with Frutiger Aero visuals that just spoke to me when I was younger. Yes, the era of the Wii was an important time indeed.
The success of the Wii practically changed Nintendo's entire approach when it came to console design that still persists with the Switch and Switch 2. Remotes you can hold and utilize for multiple methods of play, gyroscope motion-based controls, and the Wii's whole drive for gameplay innovation is what makes the Switch so incredible. The Wii itself was certainly the most influential thing about its era, but some of its games have left a pretty decent mark of their own.
In the Wii's large and fun lineup, the amount of games that have helped influence the future single-handedly is a bit slim. Some games revolutionized motion controls, some helped resurrect a genre, and others were the stepping stones of what was to come. There were plenty of memorable and fan-favorite games on the Wii, but just because it's memorable doesn't exactly mean it has a legacy behind it spanning years. Let's look at some games that do.
I remembered MadWorld years upon years after it first released, because of the shocking wave it made as part of the Wii's lineup. We all know that Nintendo is considered the more kid-centric side of the video game industry, and that was even more applicable back in 2006. Enter MadWorld, Platinum Games' first release that brings gory, dramatic violence in a gorgeous stylized package that still stands out with its great gameplay presentation.
Red Steel and Red Steel 2 beat MadWorld to the punch, claiming the title of first or second rated M Wii game, but in my opinion, it's the most artistically impressive. It also has a stronger presence as a rated M Wii game published by Sega and made by Platinum Games. It dared to push what it could put on the Wii, in a game like this, at the same time. Look up the cutscenes or some videos. Trust me. You'll be surprised this is a Wii game and not anything on Xbox or PlayStation. It feels out of place in the best way.
If you're a Paper Mario fan, then you know what sort of influence Super Paper Mario had on the series already. It used a completely different style of gameplay than we were used to at the time, and while a lot of people smile upon it fondly now, it still changed the series forever afterward. We haven't had a game exactly like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door since, and that's still seen as the peak of the Paper Mario RPGs.
For this list, I feel like Super Paper Mario is worth highlighting for the void it ended up creating. Because it changed the formula and so many people wanted another classic paper RPG, fans took it upon themselves. We've now got must-plays in the same vein, like Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. These games are such a large part of indie games that they've been dubbed "paperverse" games by developers, and each of them exist out of a nostalgic love for what Super Paper Mario left behind.
