The KCD multiplayer mod has entered open beta, with support for custom characters, player-hosted servers, and custom game modes in KCD2.
If you'd like your digital Bohemia to get a whole lot bohemian, this Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 mod, now in open beta, will let you host your own server to saddle up alongside your friends for some 15th-century antics.
The KCD 2 multiplayer mod hasn't yet reached its full release, but as of September 24, the mod has arrived in open beta, allowing anyone with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on Steam to download and run both the mod and its dedicated server tools.
According to the mod's own website, the current build supports a shared world complete with customizable characters, proximity chat, and yes, even emotes. There's even a public server players can jump right into to test things out without fussing about with the process of hosting their own. Whether those you encounter out in the world will want to work together or simply riddle you with crossbow bolts is another matter entirely.
Crucially, however, this isn't a mod that'll let you run through the main story of the game alongside a pal or two. The Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 multiplayer mod might feature horses, dogs, and plenty of ways to stick each other with the pointy end, but as of yet, the narrative is removed entirely, with hosted worlds having no impact on your single-player saves.
"There is no story and there are no quests," a news post announcing the open beta release on the mod's site reads. "Servers run the game's maps without the single-player cast: the Trosky countryside, Kuttenberg or the monastery at Klášter, one per server."
The website also notes that, with this being a public mod and open beta release, players should expect more than a few rougher edges, or as the post puts it: "It is an early build, and things break."
According to the KCD Multiplayer website, the mod's aim isn't to focus on adding co-op but to allow for all kinds of new multiplayer experiences, such as RP servers in which players act in keeping with the setting - instead of rampaging about on a horse like it's a medieval GTA, for example. Player-crafted scripting in Lua is supported, allowing server hosts to design their own game modes and control details like player spawns, the weather, fighting systems, and more. The sooner someone sets up dedicated horse racing circuits with podiums and champagne, the better, if you ask us.
